Dr. Mathew T. Thomas, M.B.,B.S.

Physician Consultant and Expert Trainer

 

After working for almost 34 years for the United States Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), Dr. Mathew T. Thomas retired in June 2023. His storied FDA career spanned medical- and scientific-reviews, leadership, and management roles. Among them are his service as Country Director of the FDA India Office in New Delhi, and Acting Health Attaché in the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi.
Dr. Thomas obtained his medical degree from the University of Madras in India and completed research fellowships in Lipid Disorders at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and in Clinical Pharmacology and Regulatory Sciences offered jointly by the U.S. FDA and Georgetown University. He obtained a Certificate in Public Health from Georgetown University, and a Certificate in Leadership and Management from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Executive Education. He also received training on High Impact Leadership from the Columbia Business School and Becoming a Leader of Leaders: Pathways to Success Program from the Wharton School of Executive Education. He also completed the Excellence in Government Fellowship offered by the Partnership for Public Service.
Dr. Thomas is also known as Dr. T. and Dr. Thamby amongst the Malayalee or Keralite community that hails from Kerala in South India, which is where his parents were born. However, Dr. T. was born and grew up in the neighboring Indian state of Tamil Nadu. In 1983, he married Nancy, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, and in the same year migrated to the U.S. They reside in Glenn Dale, Maryland, and have three children.
Dr. Thomas has extensive interests, and social engagements.
He is a member of the Mar Thoma Church and serves Christ in many capacities, and through several activities. The Mar Thoma Church, by tradition, owes its Christian faith to the Apostle St. Thomas who established seven churches along the Malabar (west) Coast of India in 52 A.D. It is a reformed Eastern Church that honors allegiance to the Nicene creed. E. Stanley Jones and Mar Thoma Church shared a close and collaborative relationship for Christian ministry in India. Both E. Stanley Jones and Dr. Anne Mathews Younnes have been renowned speakers at the Mar Thoma Maramon Conventions. Dr. Thomas also served twice as the President, and is the 2023 Treasurer, of the Ecumenical Council of Kerala Christians (ECKC), which is constituted by 16 Christian churches of Kerala origin with establishments in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. He is also an amateur theater actor and served as lighting director for stage-shows. He has written and directed several comedy skits and short plays, authored thought-provoking articles, and served as editor for publications. He co-produced two Christian religious music compact discs titled Grace Captives Vol. I and Vol. II. Dr. Thomas also rendered the narration for a 5-part documentary titled How Buddha Smiled, a documentary on Mar Theodosius Suffragan Metropolitan – A Grace Filled Journey in Christ’s Service, and a documentary on Mar Thoma XXII, which are accessible on YouTube.
